In praise of Natasha Bedingfield's Unwritten, the most iconic song of the 2000s

FEEL THE RAIN ON YOUR SKIN!

THE YEAR WAS 2004.

American voters had just reelected President George W. Bush. Ireland had put an end to smoking in pubs. The Luas had made its maiden voyage.

And an angel named Natasha Bedingfield had just unleashed Unwritten on the world.

Since its release, it has become synonymous with The Hills, faux-inspirational shampoo ads and graduation ceremonies. If you came of ages in the 2000s, chances are you’ve performed a passionate rendition of it on at least one occasion.

In fact, few things are more fun than roaring along to Unwritten like nobody’s watching.

Fists clenched, eyes closed. That kind of thing.

The lyrics are just so profound and inspirational.

Drench yourself in words unspoken! Live your life with arms wide open!

Natasha Bedingfield is a goddamn poet.

And perfect tattoo fodder.

Who among us hasn’t found ourselves unsure of where our life is heading and sought guidance from Unwritten?

“Natasha is right. I need to live my life and live out loud. I need to… impulsively book a weekend away to Amsterdam.”

Much like KT Tunstall’s Suddenly I See, it was the ultimate rom-com song of the last decade.

Just listening to it makes you feel like you’re in your very own version of The Devil Wears Prada. “Hell yeah, I’m a career woman and the world is my goddamn oyster.”

You’ll never understand why the window had to be dirty…

But you still acknowledge that it’s an iconic lyric

13 years on and you still have a soft spot for it.

What other song makes you feel like you’re in a Nancy Meyers movie and an ad for Herbal Essences all at the same time?
